Call for greater efficiency in phosphorus use in Europe

The use of phosphorus in fertilizers and in animal diets could be reduced by fine-tuning fertilization and feeding to actual nutrient requirements, say the authors of a new report calling for stewardship to tackle global phosphorus inefficiency, according to an article in Feed Navigator.

Another study looks at some of the novel and technically advanced methods of phosphorous recovery and recycling that are being implemented or are being investigated. The Belgian company EcoPhos, using a wet chemical process to recover phosphorous from fly ash coming from incineration of sewage sludge, aims to become the largest phosphate producer for animal feed in Europe in the next five years.
