Eco-toilets provide fillip to Modi’s clean India vision

Eco-toilets are providing a thrust to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's sanitation drive—Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan in Gujarat, according to an article in The Times of India.

Bio-toilets, which aim at bringing about a revolution in rural areas and motivate people to keep their homes and surroundings clean are mushrooming in the state. Sensing a business opportunity in Modi's 'toilets before temples' vision, many companies in Gujarat have come up with eco-friendly, low-cost, portable public toilets that can be installed in a few hours and use less or no water.

For instance, the Modasa Nagarpalika has hired Ahmedabad based Shelters Infrastructure to roll out 600 eco-friendly toilets in Modasa at a cost of Rs 14,900 each. Made out of recycled fly ash and other base materials, the green toilets use hardly two litres of water as compared to the conventional 25 litres as the eco-friendly toilets do not require curing.
