Firm 'pleased' after Widnes ash recycling facility plans approved by councillors

A recycling facility capable of processing 250,000 tonnes of incinerated ash every year will be built in Widnes after plans were approved by Halton Council, according to an article in Liverpool Echo.

The development control committee met earlier last month and gave the green light to plans to construct a incinerator bottom ash (IBA) recycling facility on land off Johnsons Lane in Shell Green. The facility will recycle material known as incinerator bottom ash aggregate (IBAA), which is material left over after being burnt in an incinerator.

The report and plans which councillors approved said that the facility would ‘primarily’ accept waste from the proposed Energy From Waste facility in Runcorn. It added that waste treated at the new facility would be non-hazardous and that the material would be treated to make a ‘valuable product’ which can be sold to the construction industry.
